What is the Homestead tax exemption and how do you go about getting the exemption in place? Florida has a tax incentive for homeowners that have purchased a home and are making it their permanent residence. In Florida if you have purchased and closed on a home by December of the previous tax year, you are able to register for the homestead tax exemption. You must register for the homestead by March 1 of the current year. What it does is for a single person it allows a $25,000 exemption for the taxable amount that the county appraiser says that your home is worth, and for a married couple it is $50,000. This means that if the county says that your home is worth $200,000 as a single person you would only be taxed on $175,000 and as a married couple you would only be taxed on $150,000 for your property taxes. If when you purchase the home it already has a homestead in place that will carry through for the current tax year and you would need to apply for the homestead for the following year that you have purchased the home. below is all of the information that you would need and where you need to go to apply.
